Ostrava - Ostrava wants to start the reconstruction of the area in front of the main train station in the central city district of Moravská Ostrava and Přívoz in 2028. The regional city is preparing the project concurrently with the modernization of the railway junction, which the Railway Administration is expected to complete by 2034. This was stated to journalists today by the spokesperson of the city hall, Gabriela Pokorná.

The studio CASUA created a study of the possible future form of the area for the city, which has already signed a contract with the city for the preparation of project documentation. "According to the current schedule, the draft documentation should be completed by 2026. A year later, in 2027, the city plans to obtain a building permit and announce a contractor," said the deputy mayor for strategic development, Lucie Baránková Vilamová (ANO).

The reconstruction should be completed by 2031. The proposal envisions a fundamental transformation of the transfer hub, which should facilitate transfers between various modes of public transport. The routes to the platforms will be shorter and barrier-free. The area is expected to be enlivened by greenery, a water feature, and artistic works. After the transformation, the location should be clearer and help travelers navigate.

The planned underpasses to the platforms will open into a new glass vestibule in front of the historic building at the site of the current roofing. Daylight in the vestibule will be ensured by a roof skylight. The current large shelters for public transport will be replaced by smaller ones.

"Today’s roofing in front of the train station, which is shaped based on the geometry of the existing tram loop, will be replaced by a new one that will be shaped based on the movement of passengers in the new transfer terminal. This new roofing will expand the station area with stairs and escalators to the underground passage to the trains,” stated architect Oleg Haman from the CASUA company.

The city first announced a contract for the redesign of the area in front of the main station in Ostrava in the autumn of 2024, but without success. Four applicants entered the repeated competition from this January. In the spring, the winner was the company CASUA, which is now working with the city, the City Studio for Spatial Planning and Architecture, and the Advisory Architectural Group to finalize the solution.

"The project is financed by a combination of municipal funds, investments from the Railway Administration, and European funds. While the modernization of the railway junction exceeds 25 billion crowns, the reconstruction of the area in front of the station is expected to cost in the single billion crowns," said Pokorná.
