Brno - The project for the new train station in Brno, created four years ago by the Dutch team Benthem Crouwel Architects and WEST, has won an award at the BLT Built Design Awards international competition in Switzerland. It succeeded in the category of bridges and public infrastructure, announced Filip Poňuchálek, spokesperson for the Brno city council, in a press release. The actual construction of the hub and the new station is expected to begin in 2028.
The jury of the international competition praised the monumental arches that frame the view of Petrov, the glass roof generating solar energy, eco-friendly materials, rainwater and geothermal systems, and public spaces including the waterfront promenade and park.
According to the city councillor for transport, Petr Kratochvíl (ODS), the award is a confirmation that Brno is striving to realize world-class projects. Jakub Bazgier from the Railway Administration added that the state organization is trying to collaborate with top architects to ensure that the station becomes a quality part of the cities.
Brno has had the model of the station available for four years, and people can now go to the exhibition center to see the virtual representation of the station. The reconstruction of the railway hub, which involves moving the station one kilometer south from the city center, is expected to start in 2028; however, related projects are experiencing delays.
In August, the Railway Administration announced a study on a project that will address the reconstruction of the tracks and station in Černovice. Studies for other parts of the hub were supposed to follow by the end of this year, but due to the fact that the budget of the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure has not yet been approved, the railway workers have postponed the assignment. Earlier this year, they also announced that they wanted to start the reconstruction of the bridge in Židenice over Bubeníčkova Street in April, as it needs to be widened. The estimated cost was 880 million crowns. Similarly, according to earlier plans, the reconstruction of the section from Židenice to the Černovice junction, which is to be quadruple-tracked in the future, was also supposed to start this year. However, the construction has been blocked so far by the Children of the Earth movement, which has entered the construction proceedings with its objections.
The costs of the hub reconstruction, which is expected to last eight years, were estimated two years ago to exceed 70 billion crowns.
