Opava - The reconstruction of the winter stadium in Opava is expected to be completed in the spring of next year. Workers from the construction company are finishing the concreting of the stands and the installation of air conditioning. City spokesperson Roman Konečný stated this today for ČTK. The repair of the building, which costs more than 370 million crowns, began in May two years ago.
"The project will also include landscaping around the stadium. The city is preparing the reconstruction of the entrance area, which includes a parking lot. The project documentation is already being prepared," Konečný added.
The winter stadium in Opava, built in 1953, which had fallen into disrepair and no longer met the needs of athletes, will gain a modern appearance upon completion of the work. The future of the stadium has been discussed by the city council for several years. The city's leadership deliberated between renovation and building a new facility. Ultimately, the councilors decided on an extensive renovation that will preserve some architecturally valuable historical elements in the interior of the winter stadium. Architects have cleared the hall space of added partitions, allowing the original steel structure of the hall to stand out.
The stadium was built in 1953 on the site of an earlier stadium constructed in 1858, making it the third largest in Europe after Vienna and Budapest. It opened in 1954 and was roofed in 1956 as the third in the republic.
Another goal of the complex's renewal is to create sports and wellness facilities in a modern three-story building. The contract worth 370 million crowns included the demolition of the adjacent former car dealership, a complete revitalization of the stadium, and new extensions. It also includes a complete reconstruction of the energy systems. The construction is financed solely by the city's budget.
During the reconstruction, a substitute ice surface has been made available next to the football stadium in the city park. The cost of its procurement was 40 million crowns. Everything is movable, and the city expects that the surface will also be used after the stadium reconstruction is completed.
