Biography
Alcino Peixoto de Castro Soutinho was a Portuguese architect who was part of the so-called Porto School. He graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Porto and began his professional activity in 1957. In 1961, he took advantage of a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation to continue his studies in museology in Italy, where he met several Italian architects who influenced the beginning of his career. Until 1971, he worked at the Fundação das Caixas da Previdência, where he designed several affordable housing units in northern Portugal. From 1973, he served as a professor at the School of Fine Arts in Porto and later at the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Porto. The project for the Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso Museum in Amarante in 1977 brought him international recognition, and in 1982 he received the "Europa Nostra" award for the restoration work on the Castle of Vila Nova de Cerveira. In 1984, he was awarded a prize by the International Association of Art Critics.
