Biography
Baron Alexander Raimund Wilhelm Maximilian von Branca was a German architect and artist. He was the only son from the second marriage of the officer and diplomat Wilhelm Freiherr von Branca (1870-1958) and the painter Hedwig Frankenburger (1890-1985). Alexander Freiherr von Branca married Theresa Freiin von und zu Guttenberg (1929-53, daughter of the lord of Guttenberg, Georg Enoch) and in his second marriage took Carolina Bernasconi, with whom he had one son and three daughters (Benedicta von Branca is a well-known farmer and artist). Branca lived on a listed estate in Miesbach, where he died on March 21, 2011.
The Branca family lived in the Schwabing district in the north of Munich. He attended a boarding school in Neubeuern. As the son of Protestant parents, he converted to Catholicism. During World War II, he attended Blocherer’s evening drawing and architecture courses in 1941. Branca was a soldier but was interned by the Gestapo during the Nazi regime. From 1946 to 1948, he studied architecture at the Technical University of Munich. In 1948, he continued his studies at the ETH in Zurich. In 1951, he established his own architectural studio in Munich. In 1953, he was appointed artistic director of IVA (Internationale Verkehrsausstellung, International Transport Exhibition) in Munich and from 1972 to 1988 was the district administrator of the historical heritage in Munich. In 2006, his daughter Alexandra Freiin von Branca became his successor. In 1970, he was appointed a knight of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre by Cardinal Eugène Tisserant, and on December 5, 1970, he was knighted by Cardinal Lorenzo Jaeger, the Grand Master of the order, in Cologne Cathedral.
