In 1965, he co-founded the firm Arthur Gensler Jr. & Associates Inc. with his wife Drue Cortel and her colleague James Follett, which he led until 2010 (and supervised the firm's operations until March 2017). For his work, he was awarded honorary membership in the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and in 2021, he donated $10 million to his alma mater, Cornell University. Art Gensler had four sons, two of whom are involved in the firm's operations.
