Rio de Janeiro hosted the Pan American Games in 2007. All sports and other activities related to this massive event were distributed across four different parts of the city: Barra, “Sugarloaf,” Maracana, and Deodoro. This decision was part of a broader strategy aimed at distributing both direct and indirect profits from this significant international event among more neighborhoods and their residents. This initiative included the construction of a number of new sports facilities as well as the renovation or reconstruction of existing ones.
The shooting range in Deodoro was designed with the possibility of holding the Olympic Games in 2016, for which Brazil is bidding. This multifunctional facility offers infrastructure, competition, and training areas for shooting, equestrian events, archery, and modern pentathlon. The modern facility provides training spaces for all regional, national, and international shooting competitions.
The surrounding area is characterized by a heterogeneous and often makeshift building environment. Nearby are abandoned military warehouses, densely populated favelas, industrial sites, and vast areas of wild landscape, all of which connect these elements and are slowly engulfing them. The sports facility is therefore a very important step by the city’s leadership towards the renewal and further development of this currently underdeveloped part of the city.
The complex, covering approximately 125,000 square meters, consists of modified outdoor and partially covered firing ranges and 30,000 square meters of built-up area. The entire complex is also suitably located concerning transport connections to one of the most important arteries leading from the city.
The shooting center, situated on a roughly trapezoidal plot, is defined against the surrounding landscape by a prevailing horizontal line that contrasts with the breathtaking panorama of the valley surrounded by mountain peaks.
