A client approached us expressing a desire to renovate an apartment they had just purchased. The mentioned apartment is located in a Art Nouveau building on the banks of the Vltava River in Prague. The apartment offers stunning views of the river, and the genius loci was omnipresent in the apartment. The original layout was completely inadequate, so the decision was made for a total renovation. Given that the floor area of the apartment is 125m², it was necessary to think on a larger scale. The client was open to unconventional solutions and atypical layouts. Their main requirement was to connect the individual rooms and spaces into one whole as much as possible, avoiding unnecessary division with doors and partitions and maximizing the airy feel of the apartment, which is greatly contributed to by the very high ceilings. The existing spaces were newly adjusted, the kitchen was relocated, and it was connected to the living area through passages. The home office directly adjoins the living area, separated only by a glass half-wall. For potential visitors, the office features a separate raised sleeping loft, accessible via an atypically designed bookshelf. Under the sleeping loft, there is access on the other side to a dressing room, which is situated at the entrance of the apartment. The bedrooms are located in the courtyard, providing greater privacy and a view of greenery. The parents' bedroom has its own bathroom, also separated by a glass half-wall. The bedroom also includes the original winter garden and a separate dressing room. Given the main concept - to maximize the connection of all spaces - a unifying floor covering in the form of large-format ceramic tiles measuring 3x1.5m has been used throughout the apartment. This gave the apartment a clear character, connected, and illuminated the entire space. All furniture was custom-made. Four basic materials are used in the interior: large-format tiles on the floors and cladding on the bathroom walls, atypical furniture made mostly from oak veneer in combination with matte white lacquer. Standalone pieces of furniture, such as sink countertops and the kitchen island with the dining table, are made from Corian artificial stone.
