Café ART is a café of the traditional Brno club cinema Kino Art. At the beginning of 2010, its new operator approached us with a project to revitalize the interior, so that after a year of stagnation, the café could once again become an original part of Brno's café and cultural life.
In searching for the concept solution, we soon made the decision to largely ignore the unsightly building of Kino Art from the late 1960s, as well as its current dismal state. We chose a contrasting approach and placed the café as a decorative jewel. The inspiration came from the time when the cinema was founded (under the name Jugendkino) in 1919. A reminiscence of Art Deco, Oriental bars, palms in interiors, marble, decorative glass, opals, and geometric ornamentation.
All interior accessories, the graphic design of print materials, and the selection of serving dishes and glassware were derived from the dominant POIROT pattern. It was designed in collaboration with Miss Romana Zubalová and hand-painted on the longest available wall of the café by Messrs. Milan Kober and Petr Fiala, in a color combination of black and white, turquoise, and copper. This ornament became the defining element of the entire interior.
In furnishing the café, part of the existing built-in furniture was adapted - specifically the bar and booths, with the dividers made of copilote remaining in place. Chairs made from bent chromed profiles ARA ZJ04027 complemented the seating furniture. Tables and benches were custom-made from a material combination of black-stained solid beech and polished stainless steel profiles.
The visual and tectonic form of the café is complemented by a selection of antique glass carafes for wine and water, serving porcelain and glass, and live palms on the windowsills.
In addition to alternative film productions, Kino Art currently offers, in collaboration with the café, visual art exhibitions in the Art Gallery under the curatorial guidance of Johana and Ondřej Mert.
