Depository SVK Ústí nad Labem, European Library - I.StageThe realized depository object is the first stage of the project "European Library". It consists of the reconstruction of the historical Kind villa on Na schodech street (2nd Stage - currently in the design phase) and the extension of the depository into the courtyard - the original garden (realized). The whole will serve anew for the needs of the North Bohemian Scientific Library. Historically, it was a representative residential villa with a garden, which after World War II was used as a vocational school for telecommunications, and a prefabricated workshop structure was built into the garden. This structure was demolished, and in its place, a new building was constructed with extensive depository spaces for books in the basement and areas for the public (entrance hall, lending spaces, reading room, facilities) on the ground floor. The construction was completed in September 2021. The follow-up reconstruction of the historical villa is planned to take place in the coming years.
Architectural and Spatial SolutionThe construction of the 1st stage is mainly dedicated to the storage of books, i.e., the depository. It is located in the basement of the building, measuring approximately 1000 m², and is fully equipped with sliding shelves. On the ground floor, there is a study room and reading room for the public, as well as a space for the repair and maintenance of printed materials, including complete facilities. The public area opens with a perforated glazed facade, covered by an overhanging roof, offering views of the city and the entire Elbe valley. In the elevated part, there is a spacious representative entrance hall, illuminated by roof skylights. From here, access to the neighboring historical villa will be possible in the future, whose restored historical facade frames the western wall of the hall. Adjacent to the depository, there is an elevator for transporting books, connecting the depository with the villa. On the top floor of the depository, there is then an entrance with an elevator for books (and for disabled access), linking to the service area of the rooftop parking. This driveable surface is followed by a green roof above the area designated for the public. The main entrance to the complex is created by a new covered staircase, which is cut into the original retaining wall, creating a new representative entrance from Na schodech street.
Material and Technical Solution The building is made of reinforced concrete, combined with steel elements (parts). It is based on piles, and the adjacent garden is anchored with ties. The building is insulated to meet existing thermal-technical regulations. An integral part of the building is a rooftop parking - a driveable roof. Part of the roof is vegetated, and it also includes glazed roof skylights. Supply and transportation services connect with the historical communication through the original gardens of the surrounding representative villas.
