The latest house by the Polish architectural studio Mobius Architekci, located near Warsaw, is a residence that opens up to the natural beauty. Its sloping silhouette spreads like a harp over the hillside, reaching for the farthest viewpoints of the winding river.
The local landscape is shaped by a picturesque view from the hill of the mighty Narev River, green meadows, and surrounding forests, which ultimately determined the choice of the site. A private investor decided to realize his dream of a spacious and modern home here.
The project was created by Przemek Olczyk from the Mobius Architekci studio, which has been operating in Poland since 2006. The architect placed the building into the slope and softly drew the line of the house along the river. The mass of the house, covering more than 1,500 square meters, took the form of a fold inscribed into the slope, reminiscent of a dune on the coast. Hence, the building was named – Dune.
However, the significance of the name goes much deeper and stems from the architect’s fascination with the projects of impressive residences. The house captures light while simultaneously providing shelter from the blazing sun and allowing for living both inside and outside without clear barriers and divisions. These same features build the character of the villa located on the hill above the Narev River.
The house is not visible from the driveway. This is an approach that Przemek Olczyk commonly uses. His houses are designed with their users in mind and reveal their architecture only to them, thus creating a mystery for outsiders. Ensuring sufficient intimacy for household members while maintaining openness is a common feature of Przemek Olczyk's projects.
The author of the concept has repeatedly shown that he feels comfortable designing large forms. “They give me freedom in creation and allow me to accelerate,” emphasizes Przemek Olczyk. This is also the case with Dune, whose architecture evidently delighted him and offered the investors the chance to enjoy the resulting form every day.
The extensive object, which smoothly rises from the slope, subsequently undergoes defragmentation inside the organically shaped volume. Cubist forms and sharp lines outline a semi-open atrium, ensuring intimacy and allowing light into the smaller rooms.
The concavely rounded block, which is a repetition of the river's bend on which the entire residence rests, has obtained a terrace of several hundred square meters, which is covered along its entire length and opens up to the vast landscape. This is particularly noticeable in drone shots.
Dune evokes futuristic ideas, although it returns to the minimalism that Mobius has been using for many years. From the perspective of the river, the building appears as a monolith. The balanced and cohesive space is also an effect of the materials used. White plaster and stone flooring give the building a timeless elegance. The minimalism of details adheres to the philosophy of "less is more."
Looking at the house from the river, the architect placed the bedrooms in its right part, the living room with the kitchen is in the middle, and the relaxation zone is on the left. The office is entirely to the right. According to the investor's wish, the best view of the house stretching to the horizon of the winding Narev River is offered from here.
The glass cube with bedrooms located on the roof of the house is also noteworthy. Similar to a periscope, it allows views above the crowns of the surrounding trees.
The house also features two swimming pools, one of which is covered, and a pair of helicopter landing pads, a 300-meter-long running track, and a movable platform traversing the slope. Many elements of the house are automated, which, combined with innovative technological solutions, has a direct impact on the overall comfort of living.
