Educatorium in Turku

The new buildings of the educational center and the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Turku are located on the site of former military barracks. They are designed based on the winning project of a competition held in 1999. The four-story buildings are very clearly and simply composed around a newly created square. This square is connected to the student campus and the university campus on the hill by avenues and other squares. The architecture, with its simplicity and light color scheme, reflects the appearance of the existing buildings. Most facades are made of lightly colored exposed concrete, with dark concrete, light stone, and glass block used on the ground floor, while the air conditioning machinery rooms are clad in silver corrugated metal. The outdoor bicycle shelters have oak ceilings and are illuminated by multicolored circular skylights.
