Forum Marinum

Forum Marinum
Architect: LPR Arkkitehdit
Address: Linnankatu 72, Turku, Finland
Completion:2002

Forum Marinum is now a new maritime center in Turku. This center has been constructed and developed in parts and primarily includes the Maritime Museum and Abo Museum of Maritime History. The forum is located at the site of docks designed in 1894 by architect Heige Rancken. The docks served their purpose until the 1970s. The Maritime Museum is now built from some of the buildings. The entrance to the museum is through a new building called Café Daphne. Eight-meter-high containers adapted as a reception and offices are present from Linnankatu street. The interior of the museum is thematically arranged. Separate exhibitions with individual themes have been created from old wooden grain containers. Original maritime objects were also used for the interior modifications. The space above the containers is arranged so that visitors have the opportunity to view the exhibition from suspended walkways. The technical facilities are located in a metal container at the back of the reception. Other installations are routed between the outer wall and the containers.
