Gallery and space

Gallery and space
Cooperation:Barbora Ochotná, Matyáš Cigler
Address: Kollárova 27, Znojmo, Czech Republic
Investor:Umění do Znojma, z.s.
Project:2017
Completion:2019
Area:162 m2

At the beginning, there was the idea to create a space for exhibiting contemporary art in Znojmo and thus make it accessible to the general public. At the same time, we designed a space that would serve as a base for a local association, a space for organizing community workshops, chamber theater, or lectures. It also includes a small café that ensures the sustainability of the project. The individual functions overlap and influence each other in the interior, with boundaries marked only by the shade of the materials – a dark area for the café, a light area for the gallery. While the café space is densely filled with a shelving system for displaying quality Czech design, the gallery space is empty and versatile.
Because this is a public service space, we proposed a prominent entrance portal with a canopy made of bent steel sheets, which itself acts as a refined attractor inviting exploration.
The gallery is projected into the street through large windows; one does not have to enter, one can just peek in.

Client Report
GaP / Gallery and Space is a new cultural space aimed at contributing to the enlightenment of artistic topics and maintaining interest in art in the town of Znojmo. GaP is operated by the association Art to Znojmo, which aimed to create a kind of neighborhood community that would meet intensively (not only) over visual arts. The cultural program is packed and very diverse. Besides exhibitions, concerts, theater performances, art courses for both children and adults, lectures, film screenings, listening evenings, author readings, etc. take place here. GaP wants to be open to the public while maintaining a consistent line and a set level of cultural events. In addition to two exhibition halls, there is also a café, studio, coworking space, library, and design shop offering top-notch brands like Rückl or Dechem.

GaP immediately showcases renowned names from the Czech art scene. The exhibitions here have featured Vladimír Houdek, Milan Cais, and students of Milena Dopitová's studio from the AVU. In the fall, painter Jan Gemrot will exhibit his "Path to Hyperconsciousness," paintings from the Morphosis cycle. In the future, there are plans to present young and emerging artists, as well as established names from the art scene.

The road to GaP was not easy. The association Art to Znojmo had been striving for a venue to organize cultural events for several years. Ultimately, in collaboration with the city of Znojmo, they secured attractive spaces at the corner of Kollárova street, right at the entrance to the historical center of the city. Many donors and sponsors contributed to the reconstruction and realization. The association approached the allied architectural studio ORA, and together they created a functional platform ready to bring contemporary art to a great city.
