Residential BuildingThe plot was characterized primarily by a significant slope to the south, with terrain breaks and an existing neo-Renaissance building, whose value was minimal. A massive mature Plane tree was also a landmark. The complex site conditions, the effort to utilize the historical footprint of the original house protruding from the modern street line, and last but not least, the consistent effort to preserve the Plane tree, which the building avoids, led to a unique solution with a varied internal layout and the relationship of individual apartments to the possibility of using the garden. The urban situation of the surrounding buildings can be characterized as fragmented. The task was also to find a suitable identity for the building in this environment. The design strives to embrace both the character of a classic apartment building and the smaller scale of the original neo-Renaissance structure.
House and TreeFor the overall concept, the important and fundamental decision was to preserve and integrate the Plane tree, which was assessed as feasible and appropriate for the given location, as the tree belongs to vital species with leathery leaves that increase moisture evaporation and simultaneously lower temperature in its surroundings. Detailed conditions were prepared for interventions into the root system, crown reduction, and the tree was continuously monitored by a dendrologist.
