Hotel Puerta América - 3rd floor

Hotel Puerta América - 3rd floor
Architect: David Chipperfield
Address: 41 Avenida de América, Madrid, Spain
Project:2004
Completion:2005

The author of the interiors on the third floor of the Puerta América hotel is British minimalist (and professor at Stuttgart Academy) David Chipperfield, whose aim was to create an atmosphere in which one feels comfortable through simple and straightforward means. The darkness of the corridor and the completely black elevator lobby are pierced by vertical light strips, guiding you to the individual hotel rooms and simultaneously providing a different perception of the space of the corridor than what we are usually accustomed to.
In the spatial layout of the rooms, Chipperfield did not experiment and adhered to established classics: entry, bathroom on the side, and then a large bedroom. The floors of the rooms are completely paved with handmade terracotta tiles measuring 7 x 21 cm. The double bed is complemented by a conference table made of a black material called LG Hi-Macs. The black leather bench with a backrest also blends colorfully into the black-and-white environment. The walls of the bathroom are clad in white marble slabs, and the bed linens are made of white silk. The only element that stands out in the black-and-white composition of the rooms is the azure blue-painted canopy above the bed.
