In the Berlin district of Treptow, a former fire station has been converted into a regional library with a community hall. The historicizing building by Karl August Hermann (1907-09) was remodeled according to the winning competition design by the local studio Chestnutt_Niess. The former firehouse, together with the new two-story wing, encloses a intimate courtyard, which is gradually shaded by the crown of a tree. The original structure of bare brick and romantic shapes is complemented by a minimalist, generously glazed volume clad in black metal. The new section retreats in every respect, allowing the historic building to stand out. Large openings in the façade allow plenty of natural light to penetrate the interior while also offering composed views. The open spaces of the library, with shelves, reading areas, and a children's corner, enable easy orientation throughout the entire layout due to the minimal partitions, as well as between the individual floors through ceiling openings.
