Summer apartment with a greenhouse

Summer apartment with a greenhouse
Project:2010
Completion:2011

The newly designed house stems from the need to supplement the existing family house and the extensive garden with necessary facilities, a greenhouse, a summer apartment, and a cellar for storing vegetables and wine. The house is positioned across the communication axis, which originates from "japanerie" and passes through the "cultivation" part of the garden. The communication axis runs through the newly designed house and ends in its atrium.
The main operational units of the house are:
  • The greenhouse, which forms a separate mass element attached on the eastern side and is separated by the passing communication axis.
  • Storage spaces for tools and other maintenance needs for the garden and greenhouse. These are located to the west of the communication axis and are supplemented with a "garden toilet."
  • The cellar is accessible by a staircase from the communication axis and contains spaces for storing fruits and vegetables, with a filtered wine storage accessible and a wine cellar that will be thermally insulated and can be heated with an electric heater.
  • The garden room is also accessible from the communication axis by a short connecting corridor. It is illuminated and interconnected from the south and north from the atrium by French windows. It will serve for supplementary gardening work.
  • The summer apartment is attached to the northern side of the building, closing off the northeast part of the "relaxation" garden into its atrium. The summer apartment consists of 2 rooms with a kitchenette and a bathroom with a toilet. The space is linked to the east with the atrium and partially to the west with the orchard.
  • The inner atrium complements the relaxation area of the garden with its curve of the roof. It connects individual spaces and the communication axis, creating a covered area for sitting by the outdoor fireplace.
The entire structure is designed as a single story in a footprint form of the letter "L", divided materially into two masses. One is the mass of the greenhouse with a concrete base and a sloped roof facing south, and the other is the "timber construction" with wooden cladding, which has a flat roof with a minimal parapet height to minimize the vertical impact in the garden. Apart from the greenhouse and the cellar, the building is constructed as a timber structure with wooden larch board cladding.
