Cultural Center Týnec nad Sázavou has decided to adapt the underutilized ground floor spaces of the western wing of the historical building of the former stoneware manufactory from the early 19th century for the needs of the library. The spaces designated for renovation consisted of two parts - a hall space with a barrel vault with lunettes, which was divided into two rooms, and the adjoining space of the built-in hall of the former cinema with a ladder ceiling, accompanied by a newer annex of a projection booth facing the garden.

We wanted to unify the spaces with the barrel vault into a state from the time of the manufactory and leave as much open as possible, which is why a new glass partition with transparent built-in libraries was used; the furniture is designed as built-in along the perimeter and finished with a "podium," with furniture steps spanning its entire width at the end.

The former cinema spaces are oriented north-south, thus perpendicular to the first mentioned and allowed for a connection across the building to the garden (at the location of the former projection booth). Given the elevated ladder ceilings, we decided on an added floor and for this purpose also lowered the floor by 750 mm. The steel structures of the floor, stairs, and railing are designed in a more industrial style compared to the first spaces. The goal was to achieve a more generous space while highlighting the original function of the building and expressing the ladder ceiling.

The connection between both spaces is: 1) the treatment of window niches using built-in seating that connects the cladding with the built-in furniture, 2) the material of birch plywood used throughout the library spaces, 3) the material of the flooring, which is a solid color natural marmoleum, and finally 4) the rolled painting in the lunettes above the windows and high window recesses.

The patterns for the rollers are selected from preserved designs of Týnec stoneware, which was historically produced directly in the new library spaces. A small exhibition of Týnec stoneware is located in the furniture built-in niche at the entrance part of the library. Aside from the rolled painting, which refers to the original function of the building, the entire library spaces are worked with text. Thus, visitors can immerse themselves in an excerpt from Exupéry's "The Little Prince" on the reinforced concrete ribs of the ceiling (text based on a wonderful selection by the librarians).

The interior design aimed to create spaces for a modern library for borrowing books, author readings, various forms of lectures and workshops, and also for enjoyable leisure time for all generations. The design also allows for the beauty of the historical building to shine, from which every visitor should take away a pleasant experience. The spaces are conceived to be generously open while also providing opportunities for peace and privacy in various alcoves and recesses. Comfortable stays are accentuated by natural materials such as marmoleum on the floor, birch plywood, and rolled painting.

The library is operationally divided into four parts: the entrance area, children's section, adult section, and teen section. In the entrance area, book loans and returns or browsing through magazines take place. There is a possibility for comfortable seating with coffee or viewing the current exhibition or permanent display in the built-in showcase. The children's section with a podium and steps can be used for author readings, workshops, children's sleepovers, or simply for parents to spend leisure time with their children. The teen section, located in the inserted floor, offers workspace for doing homework on the gallery or stepped alcoves for a group of teenagers to hide. In the center of the adult section, there are workstations with PCs in a configuration of eight work desks against a backdrop of freely chosen books. In the back of the library, in the location of the original annexed projection booth, there is an office for the librarians and a small archive with a mobile shelving system. In the summer months, the connection of the library to the garden of the cultural center will be allowed, inviting visitors to sit with a book in the historical gazebo or on a bench under the tree canopies.
