Because the original municipal theater in Recklinghausen was not very welcoming for visitors, the council decided to announce a competition for its reconstruction. The architectural duo from Stuttgart—Auer and Weber—won the competition. Their proposal consisted of demolishing the original entrance and creating a new glass lobby complemented by bold canopies, which unfortunately uncomfortably resemble Foster's canopy at Carre d'Art in Nimes. In connection with the effective use of the theater, a conference center was added behind its own mass, allowing the building to come to life much more often throughout the year than during the Ruhr Music Festival. The entrance lobby contains a café that operates every day, so residents of Recklinghausen can take advantage of pleasant refreshments during their walks in the city park. It thus appears that multifunctionality in public buildings is currently essential.
