General and Citizen Schools on Tylovo Embankment

The narrower architectural competition for elementary and secondary schools took place in 1925, and the first prize was again awarded to architect Gočár. The construction of the complex adjacent to the gymnasium began in May 1926, and its first half was completed in August 1928. The construction was carried out by builders Josef Novotný and Josef Vyleťal, with construction supervision conducted by builder Josef Jihlavec.
Between 1956 and 1959, the second half of the complex - the Elementary School in Zálabí (designed by Ing. V. Rohlíček) - was completed. This additional elementary school was built symmetrically along the north-south axis as the western part of the school complex in the spirit of Gočár's original design.
The three-wing, two-story building is brick, designed similarly to the preceding gymnasium, with the street facade constructed of exposed brick contrasting with cement plaster on the cornices, intermediate pillars, bases, and entrance portico. The roof of the structurally differentiated building is flat, ending with a prominent cornice. The rooftop extensions are connected by a reinforced concrete pergola.
The school is designed as a two-wing structure, with a 2-meter height difference between the riverside sidewalk and the courtyard, which is utilized in both the spatial and architectural design of the building. The shared schoolyard is bordered by symmetrically placed wings of both schools.
After World War II, the elementary and secondary schools were merged into one primary school, and several rooms underwent functional changes to create more classrooms. Gradual renovations included installation updates, floor replacements, etc. These construction modifications did not affect the exterior appearance of the building.
