Burnt Cabin
The charred cabin, ordered by clients as their mountain retreat, is located in a somewhat unusual place for the residents of Santiago (the fifteen-thousand-strong town of Olmué, famous for its folk festival, lies one hundred kilometers northwest of Santiago de Chile – translator's note). Before the advent of automobiles, a winding road connecting the main Chilean city with the port of Valparaiso ran through the coastal mountains. In contrast to the open landscape, the cabin is designed as a closed shelter with measured interaction with the surroundings, perceivable at two height levels.
At the entrance level (1), there is a single window that influences all activities in the elevated room, while accompanying activities like cooking or the bathroom are located beneath the mezzanine. In the center of the layout is a steel ladder, leading up to the attic (2), where two horizontal windows frame views of the picturesque mountains on opposite sides.
Construction
From the outset, the plan was to build the cabin by hand with SIP panels. The prefabricated elements are designed to be installed on stilts on a steep slope. The entire structure was assembled easily and quickly by a three-member team.
To avoid the use of chemical products, the pine cladding boards were charred on-site in a traditional manner. The thin charred layer prevents further degradation of the outer shell and protects the house from weather effects. The interior cladding made of plywood covers all electrical wiring and plumbing, while providing a pleasant finish and warm atmosphere.
