Sustainable adaptation process. Working with the standardized floor plan of panel buildings from the 1960s. The defined relationships in the family and the degree of intimacy change from generation to generation. The original space lacks lightness. It is too rigid, structured, and defined. The layout is defined by a skeletal-panel spatial frame with an axial dimension of 3.9 x 3.9 meters, clearly delineating the rooms. Each closed, visually and acoustically separated. We try to grasp this spatial grid more as a bearer of the basic delimitation of space and not as an untouchable element strictly defining individual spaces. We disrupt the scheme with simple openings. We let in light, create vistas and depth in places where none existed before.
We find it extremely important to express ourselves on the topic of living in “paneláks.” The current situation in the real estate market, enormous financial demands for acquiring property, and young families whose way of life is incompatible with the spaces these apartments offer. In order to be able to maintain these houses, it is important to show that they do not have to be condemned and that adaptation to current needs is possible. In this case, we sought to find a kind of manual that works with the space while also considering finances. Opening the space and creating vistas and depth through axially arranged openings (all cut openings are dimensioned so that it is unnecessary to use steel beams and frames), directly connecting the kitchen with the living area and creating a fully functional space for socialization, reducing the number of doors (doors to the hall, doors to the kitchen, doors to the corridor, doors to the bathroom), increasing the light in the inner corridor by means of openings from the living rooms, and removing outdated decorative elements from the period. All of these interventions contribute to the creation of a fully functional, airy, inspiring, and open space, thus helping to find an affordable housing solution for young people.
