Reconstruction and extension of the BASIS Prague school

Reconstruction of a heritage-listed villa and the extension of a pavilion

Reconstruction and extension of the BASIS Prague school
The goal of the reconstruction and extension was to convert the former villa of the cement plant director for the needs of an international primary school.
The building was created as part of the construction of the Podolí cement plant in the last third of the 19th century. The historical object, with a distinctly irregular floor plan, is surrounded on its eastern and southern sides by adjacent retaining walls. In front of the main entrance, there is a staircase and a portico with a balcony on the first floor.
The plot is significantly influenced by the adjacent steep wooded slope of the Kavčí hory, the edge of which is defined by a set of retaining walls that create a jagged cut. The neighboring buildings on the street are newer high-rise residential and office buildings that have completely changed the scale of the entire neighborhood.
The newly added one-story pavilion is situated in the garden area to the north of the historic villa. Its form respects the neighboring historic object, which provides the area with scale and character. The ground floor mass of the building is on a rectangular floor plan, with a façade treated with wooden columns extending to the full height. Between the columns, glazed panels alternate with panels filled with opaque glass.
