Brno Apartment Renovation

Brno Apartment Renovation
Address: Brno, Czech Republic
Project:2024
Completion:2025

Usable area: apartment 67 m², terrace 23 m²
The young couple approached the project with the question of whether their existing apartment in the center of Brno could be adapted for the life of their family of four. The design transformed the layout of the ground-floor apartment in a residential building from the original 2+1 into a comfortable 3+kk and, despite minimal construction interventions, gave it a new identity primarily through custom-designed built-in furniture and a considered use of materials and color.

The character of the interior is defined by strong primary colors—red, green, and blue. Rich, warm tones emphasize an earthy quality, appearing in terracotta tiles, clay plasters, warm shades of white, and in the chosen color temperature of the lighting. Light played a key role in the design, as the apartment’s position partly below street level—creates specific lighting conditions.

The main living space is divided into kitchen and living areas by a diagonal line, highlighted through contrasting floor finishes and wall surfaces. This diagonal not only organizes the space into functional zones but also visually enlarges it and gives it a more open feel. A built-in cabinet with a triangular footprint follows this line, concealing a refrigerator on one side and accommodating a television on the other. The kitchen island at the center can be extended for larger gatherings. The diagonal concept is also reflected in the design of a planned winter garden extension, which will expand the living space in the future.

To accommodate two children in one room, sleeping lofts with integrated desks and storage made of stained plywood were introduced. Slanted structural elements continue the diagonal motif: they create more enclosed areas above while leaving the space below open. In the parents’ bedroom, a double bed spans the full width of the room and incorporates additional storage. The wardrobe is an original piece of furniture, reused and updated with new doors.

The project emphasizes the use of existing elements and the sustainability of materials. Doors and parquet floors were restored, and the original wooden flooring in the hallway was uncovered. The centrally located hallway is fully utilized with built-in storage and brightened by a large mirror, behind which are a walk-through wardrobe and the entrance to the bedroom. The bathroom entrance is concealed behind sliding doors, which, when opened, reveal deep blue tiles that add a distinct accent to the space.
