Reconstruction of the former school building into a municipal office

Reconstruction of the former school building into a municipal office
Investor:obec Velatice
Project:2015
Completion:2016

Concept
The building of the former elementary school is, apart from the chapel on the village square, the only historical structure in the municipality that still exhibited several original historical elements. Many of them were destroyed, especially after the operation of the elementary school ended in the 1970s when the building was supplemented with single-story extensions and began to be used for commercial purposes. Gradually deteriorating, the local authorities decided to renovate the building and use it as the municipal office's headquarters. The generous spaces of the former classrooms and offices allowed the building to also accommodate additional facilities for the village residents - a local library and a so-called family center - a multifunctional room where parents with children begin to gather, art openings are held, lectures take place, and a small café is planned to operate in the summer.

Urbanism
Part of the proposal included the modification of the space around the building and the creation of a dignified area in front of it, as well as considering the improvement of access to the building itself. The building has three original separate entrances that were preserved - the main entrance near the offices, the second entrance is from the new parking lot and is barrier-free, and the third entrance is located at the rear of the building, where a new children's playground is situated. From this side, the building "looks" down the hill at the entire village, and since the terrain here is lower than the floor level, this third entrance was supplemented with a terrace that connects directly to the changing room and family center.
The reconstruction of the building was complete - from underpinning the building and necessary static security to new installations and a new roof.

Facade
The original state of the house's facade was in very poor condition. Most of the original historical elements on the facade (rustication, pronounced reveals around the windows, cornice) were missing; only the cornice was preserved, but a piece was also missing above the entrance. Two single-story extensions were built onto the original elementary school building during its operation, which were left intact and are used as necessary technical support for the building. The original historical part of the building received a new facade plaster in white, and the missing cornice was added. The new roofing matches the original - unglazed ceramic tiles, the lowered gutters have been returned above the eaves cornice. All windows in the building have been replaced, the frames are wooden, and all three entrances to the building are fitted with new entrance doors. The existing plinth has been removed and replaced with a stone plinth made of granite slabs. Both extensions have new cladding made of stained spruce boards.

Interior
The building is functionally divided into three main parts - administration (offices with background facilities), library, and the so-called family center, which is a multifunctional space for the needs of the village residents. All these facilities and their backgrounds are connected by a main corridor accessible from all three entrances to the building. The interior of the building is designed simply using basic materials and colors. A prominent feature is the exposed brickwork in the corridor and the offices; in the mayor's office, the plaster with the original painting in several layers was preserved. The office has access to a kitchenette, and a second kitchenette is located near the family center. The corridor also provides access to all background facilities - restrooms, storage rooms, and access to the attic. All entrances to the main rooms have been enlarged with fixed glazed skylights, allowing the corridor to be filled with daylight. At the entrance to the municipal office, there is a large board with information for citizens, along with a bench and a display case with artifacts found in the village and surrounding areas. The library, equipped with shelves, includes a reading corner and a children's corner. The multifunctional room - the family center is designed so that the furniture can be easily arranged into various configurations or stored away to avoid obstruction. The room is outfitted with rails for hanging pictures, sound systems, and potential connections for a projector. The floors are designed with durable gray vinyl, while the offices feature carpeting.
