Reconstruction of the attic of the Tuscany Palace at Hradčanské Square aimed to return the spaces their original airiness, openness, and dignity—while maintaining an administrative function. The original division of the space was fragmented, improperly partitioned, and almost devoid of natural light.
The key principle of the design was the spatial clearing of the attic—removing inappropriate dividing walls and maximizing the opening of the space up to the level of the roof structure. This resulted in a unified, visually connected space that reveals the full monumentality of the original wooden truss.
The individual office workplaces are placed in transparent modules—subtle glass boxes with a steel structure. These units allow for the preservation of both visual and light continuity throughout the space, while ensuring the desired acoustic and perceptual privacy for users as required by the investor. As a result, the space is clear, open, and airy—showing clear respect for the historical context.
The dominant motif of the interior is the exposed structure of the historical truss. Massive wooden elements remain exposed to the greatest extent possible, forming the main aesthetic plane. The newly inserted elements merely complement them: the materials and colors are chosen to be subdued and respectful of the historical character.
An exceptional space was also created within the palace tower, where a meeting room with a view of Prague Castle is located. The overall solution connects history with functionality, formal austerity with spatial quality—and creates a timeless work environment with a clear sense of place.
The technical challenge of the solution was to ensure all contemporary standards placed on similar spaces, primarily hiding the cooling and heating systems, without visible interventions in the treated space. This was achieved by placing both new and existing conduits behind the drywall partitions at the base of the trusses and into the raised floors of the glass boxes.
