Reconstruction of the Sebastião da Gama school

Reconstruction of the Sebastião da Gama school
Address: Rua da Escola Técnica, Setúbal, Portugal
Investor:Parque Escolar, E.P.E.
Project:2008
Completion:2010
The reconstruction concerns the school complex of existing buildings and their interconnection with a newly implemented structure, with a central courtyard serving as a unifying place-making element.
The project underwent a comprehensive analysis of existing buildings, assessing their usability, hierarchy, relationships, and internal connections, taking into account their scale and location within the complex. The basic layout of the school classrooms in the two existing buildings remained unchanged.
The heart of the project is the internal, central courtyard "square," which is linked to the functions of the individual buildings. The courtyard serves as a functional backbone of communication connections around its perimeter, covered by a shading pergola. This functional scheme significantly contributed to the overall integration of the complex. A new building with a distinctive exterior appearance has been proposed between the gymnasium and the classroom building, which includes a library, a multifunctional room, a space for copying services, a café, and an outdoor playground located on the roof of the building.
The proposed changes to the complex also included the reception building at the main entrance of the school complex. Individual construction interventions improved and enhanced the thermal climate and acoustics of the buildings. The school workshops and interior playgrounds have also been repaired, supplemented with side views and locker rooms that are illuminated by skylights of a sawtooth roof. The external areas have also been modified and reinforced, complemented by fixed garden furniture that creates a relaxation zone with landscaping in the form of a tree thicket.
