Revitalization of an apartment in a historic block

Dialog with the architecture of Alois Balán and Jiří Grossmann

Revitalization of an apartment in a historic block
The three-room apartment we present to you is located in a recently revitalized block of officer and sergeant houses. This block, built in 1925 according to the design of architects Alois Balán and Jiří Grossmann, represents a significant architectural legacy. In creating the new interior design, we approached the conceptual foundation of the building with respect, particularly focusing on the wooden beam ceiling.

The exposure of the ceiling in the living area (living room, kitchen, dining room) became a key element of the entire interior. This open space was created by removing the partition between two passage rooms. The ceilings were acoustically insulated by inserting layers of sand panels and oak parquet. The ceiling height of the living area has thus increased to an impressive 3250 millimeters. The third room has been preserved, only supplemented with a second bathroom—laundry room. The original kitchen, maid's room, and pantry were transformed into the master bedroom. The bathroom was expanded into an L-shape, enhancing user comfort. The apartment also features a balcony in the living area and a smaller loggia.

Among the important architectural elements is the preservation of rounded corners of the walls, which were also added to the new partitions. This detail creates a pleasant, soft impression in the interior. The floors in most of the apartment consist of original, century-old oak parquet. These were completely dismantled, including the floor constructions, and partially supplemented with new pieces. They were subsequently treated with a transparent oil, which surprised with a darker shade. The furniture features stained oak veneer and matte black surfaces in the living area. Instead of a classic TV, there is a projector that projects images directly onto the wall. In designing the interior, we aimed for a harmonious connection of authentic layers with new creative inputs.
