The family house is located in the gardens of the old rural development in Bernolákovo. The shape of the house presents an interesting concept that arose as a reaction to the surrounding buildings.
On one side, it responds to the nearby cubic development, while on the other side it reflects the archetype of a rural house with a gable roof. The artistic expression of the solution is based on the composition of white mass, into which dark geometric glazing surfaces are inserted.
The project (as we mentioned) was not a standard assignment between the architect and the investor. In this case, one of the authors, along with their partner, was the builder. Both were considering non-standard living that would be part of the community but would also have its intimacy and distance from the noise of the street.
The house utilizes the potential of the surrounding gardens, and the view of the landscape is important. The interior emphasizes functional, material, and artistic aspects of the solution. An internal environment has thus emerged, which creates favorable conditions for the creative work that both investors engage in.
Location is a key factor. The house is situated as the third of six detached family houses between Poľovníckou and Potočnou streets. The densely built plot, measuring 15x200m (the entire street), is accessible via a shared private road. The alternation of house-garden-house... on the inner street is a trend, especially in suburban settlements. The surrounding buildings with gable roofs are predominantly from the early and mid-1980s.
The realized structure creatively connects to the rural context. It is based on sloping roofs but changes their form into a contemporary sloping diagonal shape with a longitudinal axis from north to south, which thus becomes the axis of the entire designed space and simultaneously provides a different experience from every angle of view. The transverse direction (inside the development) is not built upon. It opens interesting views into the greenery, especially from higher vantage points.
The house itself has a plot size of 4.6 ares. It is located in its northern part, where there is space for 2 cars, the entrance to the garage, and the entrance to the house. The southern part of the plot consists of a grassy area with a barrier-free connection to the interior of the house. The house does not want to close itself off. It wants to communicate with its surroundings. The elimination of fences is atypical for Slovak conditions but commendable. According to the authors, it contributes to building good neighborly relations (which we firmly believe :-).
The layout of the house is divided into a living area on the ground floor. It consists of a connected living room, dining room, kitchen, and a separate garage with a technical room. The first floor of the house forms the working and relaxation area - it communicates with the ground floor through an open stair gallery. When designing the layout, emphasis was placed on maximum openness. The views within the interior, as well as views into the gardens, form an important part of the living space.
Since the house is realized independently, the structure was from the beginning designed using readily available and easy-to-process materials. The ground floor is free and open. The first floor is supported by two load-bearing walls separating the living area from the garage and technical room. The first floor is also designed as an open space. It is divided only by partitions. The roof structure is not supported; it rests solely on the exterior walls.
The construction of the roof is interesting in that to maintain a clean shape (also in the interior), it was not possible to brace the rafters with tie beams. Therefore, the roof structure is designed as a truss, laterally stiffened with struts. The complexity of the roof is further emphasized by the fact that it has an asymmetric, sloping-gable shape with the peak positioned diagonally across the house.
The facade features white acrylic plaster. The details around the windows are made of glued facade cladding with a glossy black finish. The openings are filled with aluminum frames with fixed and opening glazing. The windows have a glossy black finish with internal white textile shading.
The architectural solution is also supported by the surface treatment of the roof made of a white liquid membrane. In this form, it has been implemented in Slovakia for the first time. The unification of the surfaces of the facade and roof consolidates the shape of the house and helps the sculptural form stand out.
Inside, drywall cladding on the walls and ceilings with a white matte finish is used. The white matte cast floor is occasionally complemented by oak cladding. Each room has a basic white color scheme. Selected positions are accentuated by a wooden detail in the form of embedded flooring, cladding, ceilings, or even wooden sinks and shower enclosures... Important interior elements (e.g., seating and lighting) are complemented by transparent objects made of clear polyacrylate.
A crucial element in both the interior and exterior is lighting, which was given great emphasis. On its design, functional, and technical aspects. Lighting is a full-fledged expressive means, bringing quality illumination and emotions to the house through various lighting scenes. An interesting aspect of the lighting project is that it is entirely an authorial solution, and all lights were developed and manufactured to measure.
