Usable area: 116 m² house, 64 m² facilities
The family with three small children decided to return to their native region. The plot is located on the southern side of the town, adjacent to the forests of the Jizera Mountains, with a view of the Art Nouveau chapel by the picture. The surrounding area showcases the architectural time lapse of the 20th century, densely populated by the constructions from the 90s in the north. To the south, there's a view of zen booths by Petr Stolín, which programmatically manifest minimal needs for life. Integrating into this essence was a challenge.
Our house was to be low-energy, not too large, with sufficient facilities for family living and garden enjoyment. We modeled the possibilities of the site together and clarified the priorities from which the design emerged on the northern side of the plot. A single-story house, with partially lifted floors for the bedrooms, to oversee Ještěd while extending towards the access road. The house is based on a corridor concept, an axis connecting the living rooms to the south and service rooms to the north. A corridor, with a beginning and an end, looking out onto a meadow.
The heart of the house is the living space with a kitchen nook and a spacious covered terrace, while the upstairs is for sleeping, retreating, and watching the weather. When Ještěd is cloudless, it's best to get on a bike and head into the Jizera Mountains; otherwise, you can heat up the sauna on the ground floor and open a bottle of red wine.
The house is designed as a wooden skeleton with exposed "I" beams, insulated with blown cellulose, and the reinforced concrete slab is based on XPS. The house is mechanically ventilated and during winter fluctuations heated by electric direct heaters or wood-burning stoves. In summer, it is shaded using outdoor blinds until the terrace is overgrown with greenery; in the meantime, a tarp from an unnamed Swedish manufacturer will help out. The larch facade will soon turn gray, and the northern side, clad in black cedrite, is ready for children's chalk. I am looking forward to when the little girls become bolder. They draw very nicely, in fact. I have an angel from them for my New Year cards that would look beautiful there.
Thanks to the clients, the construction company, and the technical supervision, I enjoyed visiting the site and I am pleased that the residents quickly settled into the house.
