This property is provided within the building zone, and positions itself even rather set back to the west, creating a wider non-buildable strip. This strengthens the open character and guarantees privacy towards the neighbor. We have strived for the contextual integration of the volume into the environment in terms of scale. We do not aspire to an explicitly present building or an alienating building, but a volume that fits into its environment in terms of scale and materiality.
At BLAF we design highly performant sustainable homes, based on an integral approach on an economic, energetic, ecological, cultural and social level. Our vision is based on the ‘Trias Energetica’, where we limit losses and needs through compactness and a performant insulating shell. We build free of fossil fuels, and focus on renewable energy to cover the needs.
Due to its location, the house is car-dependent. In order to still limit this mobility, the house is designed slightly more spacious than just the residential function, so that working from home is possible. Despite the larger surface area, a compact volume of 2 storeys is chosen.
In a well-insulated and airtight house, little heat is lost. It is more difficult to keep a house cool in summer than to heat it up in winter. By applying a mechanical ventilation system, the heat is distributed throughout the entire house. That warm air rises is a thermodynamic law that cannot be undone. Based on this regularity, it is more logical in terms of living comfort to position the living spaces above the sleeping spaces, since living spaces are best 2°C warmer than sleeping spaces. This principle contrasts with the classic house-with-garden model, where the garden connects with the living space. By applying the volume sunken, we reconcile both principles: sleeping spaces can still be positioned below the living spaces, and additionally, we focus on the strongest possible relationship between living space and garden. 2 round terraces are brought to the same level as the living space, ensuring that a qualitative outdoor space belongs directly to the living spaces anyway. An elevated view from the living space onto the underlying fields is also a quality. Furthermore, through the garden design, a ground-bound interaction is created between living space and garden.
