At the former Žižkov train station, new construction is underway, with people streaming around the corner with arcades to fulfill their duties and relax in the nearby park. The Asian café Sensu, with a passion for matcha, serves as an oasis of calm in this dynamic environment of new Žižkov.
The interior project addressed every centimeter of furniture, ceiling, walls, and flooring. From the dilatation joints in the concrete to the edge trims in stainless steel. The design process was energized throughout by the exceptional approach of the investor, who, among other things, traveled to Japan to establish relationships with local tea growers, thus supporting the entire effort with a dedicated commitment to uncompromising quality.
The interior is based on a modest palette of materials: wood, linen, concrete, and glass. The natural and earthy tones of the furniture highlight the vibrant color of matcha and sweets. Just as we emphasized a rich palette of colors, we also focused on the complementary characteristics of the materials. Next to shiny stainless steel is velvet oak veneer, while rigid concrete is complemented by soft waves of linen curtains. The individual elements – chairs, tables, lights, glasses, mugs – are unified and create a harmonious atmosphere for the café's visitors.
A long bar in a straight line dominates the space, directing movement in the café and providing the staff with all the preparation support. For Sensu, we also designed a unique family of tables and benches – a round table with a diameter of two meters, rectangular tables for four people, and a bar table at the entrance. All energy and resources are invested purposefully and practically. The grid ceiling above the bar addresses the acoustics above the coffee machine, allows for proper air conditioning function, and its deep shadows add weight to the bar. The interior works with light and shadow to ensure that the space is cozy and comprehensible.
