Northern Courtyard of the New Town Hall in Ostrava

Northern Courtyard of the New Town Hall in Ostrava
Address: Prokešovo náměstí 8, Moravská Ostrava, Ostrava, Czech Republic
Investor:Statutární město Ostrava
Completion:2014

The northern courtyard of the town hall is located within the layout of the New Town Hall building in Ostrava and is surrounded on all four sides by the individual wings of the building. It is connected to Horova Street by a passage and linked to the town hall by three staircases. The courtyard was not open to the public; it was used for operational purposes, its surface made of poor-quality asphalt, where metal garages were placed, see photo.
The reconstruction has created a space with quality paving, resting elements, and one tree (a Japanese cherry) with stretched stainless steel nets serving as a trellis for freshly planted grape seedlings. The location of the trellis will allow for any work on the façade of the building. The grown vines will create a beautiful green and lush boundary of this area within a few years. Part of the courtyard is covered by a steel structure with glass infill.
The space can now serve as a break courtyard with the possibility of stretching on a wooden bench, for sitting and for walking. Barrier-free access (also for the public) from Horova Street will allow this space to be used as a multifunctional area for various presentations, outdoor exhibitions of artworks, receptions, meetings with citizens, chamber concerts, and other performances. The new access ramp and base for the currently restored granite relief featuring the state emblem from the 1st Republic (which was found during excavation work in this courtyard) are made of washed concrete, the paving is Jeseník marble, and the wooden elements are jatoba.
