Greenhouse of the Institute of Botany at the University of Graz

The greenhouse of the Faculty of Botany at the University of Graz
Architect: Volker Giencke
Address: Holteigasse 6, Graz, Austria
Project:1982
Completion:1989-93

The entire complex consists of three glassed paraboloids with different climatic zones, which diagonally disrupt the axiality. The ridge of the greenhouses slopes significantly in one direction, and the entire structure is clad in prismatic glass panels. These parts are for research and cultivation purposes. The greenhouses are accessible to the public and are interconnected by a network of paths and bridges. The lightweight aluminum structure allows maximum lighting of the interior. The water heating system is integrated into the main load-bearing structure's pipes. The cooling system consists of a valve system that is capable of releasing microscopic droplets, thus creating mist. The curved and cushion-like panels made of double plexiglass complete the structural expression of the building, which stands out significantly from traditional greenhouses and tends to appear more like a fuselage with dual tension inside.
