Tower of the Winds

Tower of the Winds
Architect: Toyo Ito
Address: Kanagawa, Yokohama, Japan
Completion:1986

The Tower of Winds was designed as a ventilation and water tank facility for a shopping center located right underneath it. A concrete box is concealed within an oval cylinder made of numerous perforated aluminum panels. The tower, with its substantial physical presence, loses that presence after sunset and transforms into a phenomenon of light. I refer to this transformation from an opaque substance into a transparent object of light as 'fictional.'
Toyo Ito, 1997

Reconstruction of the 21-meter-high concrete ventilation tower at the roundabout in the center of Yokohama, near the train station. The new structure is clad in perforated aluminum panels and synthetic reflective plates, creating an oval within which 1280 small lamps and nine neon rings are hidden. Their lighting and extinguishing are controlled by 30 computers.
