AssignmentThe project seeks a suitable urban and landscape design solution for the Vidoule area. The proposal examines the suitability of the functional use of the recreational area. The condition is to find a solution that will not require a change to the valid zoning plan of the capital city of Prague, i.e., it will comply with the existing functional use while also meeting the requirements of the ZÚR of the capital city of Prague for SP/4 Vidoule – Cibulka – Motol.
AbstractThe urban and landscape study project for Vidoule is a vision of how to transform the neglected area of the table mountain. Its transformation will enable the active use of the wild landscape of Vidoule by locals and residents of Prague. Open natural sports areas, combined with an improved road network, keep the sports image of Vidoule as lively and organically changing as its most important part – nature.
As one of the unstoppable locations in Prague, Vidoule has a high recreational potential of citywide significance. One of the study's goals, therefore, is to seek solutions that will enable the creation of a representative and valuable natural park for meeting people and spending leisure time while preserving the values of the local nature. For this purpose, a team of architects, landscape architects, sociologists, and expert consultants has been assembled under the leadership of the Reaktor studio. The urban and landscape study project for Vidoule is supported by the Prague 5 City District.
Urban and landscape study for Vidoule is based on the clear genius loci of the place – i.e., the wild nature amidst a developing city. It further connects with the very essence of the mountain's name, Vidoule - to see. Due to its panoramic views of the entire Prague, this place is unique in the system of Prague parks.
Design. Preserving and supporting the natural character alongside the unobtrusive incorporation of activities are the cornerstones of the revitalization of the area. The proposal benefits from the natural values of the area, preserving them and further developing them. On a second level, it focuses on the unique views of the city and works with them in the form of viewing circuits. In another layer, it works with suitable integration of sports and activities to create a lively place for use. Last but not least, it locates Vidoule within the system of Prague greenery and newly defines the area as an important connection between adjacent neighborhoods.
Concept. The determining factor of the place is the geological substrate – that is, two superimposed layers of slate and sandstone creating the characteristic steep slopes of the table mountain. On these slopes are the most valuable natural units and also areas of special protection – natural monuments. Therefore, the proposal defines a naturally valuable ring with a special non-invasive approach to intervention. It places circuits at the edges of the slope, guiding visitors throughout the area and offering them a comprehensive exploration of Vidoule. On the lower circuit, these are primarily natural values and connections to the surrounding city (partially also taking over pedestrian transit traffic). The upper circuit focuses on views and connections to the active use of the natural park. The plateau, most affected by human activity, is defined by the study as an active plateau for sports and recreational use with an emphasis on suitable integration into the wild nature.
The study seeks a connection between the elements of wild nature and the composed landscape, as well as between the active use of the park while preserving and developing the existing composition of plants and wildlife. For this purpose, basic pillars of the approach were established, addressing the following topics: primarily
linking to historical values, preserving the natural character, activating urban connections, non-invasive incorporation of activities, and including the public. The English translation is powered by AI tool. Switch to Czech to view the original text source.
