The assignment (or our wish) was to find and reconstruct one of the houses in Lanzarote while adhering to the "national" color scheme of Lanzarote, which is white and green. On this Canary Island, there are very strict regulations regarding building height, building density, and especially its coloration. As a result, the whole island appears very harmonious – only white architecture set against a lava-black landscape and greenery in the form of palms. This color scheme became the central theme of the entire interior.
The author of the original project is the local office DISEÑO LANZAROTE. The reconstruction of the villa from 2000 was approached as a partial adjustment of the layout with the aim of creating more bedrooms. Originally, the villa served a couple, and all spaces were almost absurdly spacious. At the same time, we limited ourselves to simple interventions out of caution. We added airiness to the bathroom with large-format glazing and a view into the garden. We reduced the living area and combined the living room with the kitchen and dining room. On the upper floor, there is a yoga studio and a rooftop sun terrace with an outdoor shower. We connected the indoor living space with the outdoor terrace, where we poured a long dining table and seating with a pergola by the lava wall. An outdoor barbecue kitchen was also created in this area. The living terrace connects to the garden with a pool.
We decided to change all the original surfaces of the floors and walls. We removed unsuitable surfaces such as wooden floors, which are absolutely unsuitable for the local environment and the wood dampens. We replaced the flooring with white concrete floors with a white coating. For the bathroom walls, we chose green tiles. We used local lava stones for accents, such as supporting the countertop in the bathroom or as a feature wall on the terrace. We newly constructed windbreak walls made of concrete blocks on both terraces, which also serve as a visual barrier for the bathrooms.
Energetically, the house is very advantageous; it has no special heating or cooling requirements. The climate on the island is almost constant throughout the year. Heating is only supplementary in the form of a fireplace in the living room. Cooling is not necessary for most of the year, and the house naturally ventilates; only for extreme temperatures, which occur rarely on the island, are the bedrooms equipped with air conditioning. Water heating is provided by solar heating on the roof of the house. All building materials are locally sourced, and most of the furniture, especially large pieces, was bought directly on the island. We used local suppliers for all the works, which resulted in an incredible series of adventurous experiences. Only vintage furniture and some accessories were brought from the Czech Republic, as the selection on the island is very limited.
