Private villa arch. Krohy

Private villa arch. Krohy
Architect: Jiří Kroha
Address: Sedlákova 45, Stránice, Brno, Czech Republic
Completion:1928-31

When building my house, I used Heraklith slabs as insulating inserts in the ceilings on the terrace and insulation in the exterior walls and partitions. Despite the fact that the house has large window openings (single windows double glazed) and despite the fact that it stands in a location exposed to northwest winds, it is warm. I can thus say that Heraklith has proven to be very effective in my house.
The exterior walls are insulated in two ways. Externally, there is a hollow 15 cm brick partition, followed by a 5 cm Heraklith board on cement and regular machine-made bricks placed vertically. In the second case, the Heraklith insulation is on the inside of the wall.
I note that no cracks have appeared in the Heraklith walls. It is, however, very important that the Heraklith slabs are not unnecessarily broken by the installation of water, electrical power, gas, and central heating.
Heraklith has proven to be very effective as thermal insulation in the ceilings of the first floor under the terrace, although the ceilings are only 40-45 cm thick in total, including leveling layers, and are covered with sensitive plaster finishes with polished painting in a bright color; they do not suffer at all in winter from the slightest condensation or slight misting of the painting, which is brightly glossy. The Heraklith insulation is 5 cm thick and was placed in cement mortar without any additional mortar filling.
