Golden Canyon – the rocky Sázava valley between Kamenný Přívoz and Pikovice, with the dominant Medník hill, a wild, romantic landscape. Places where Czech tramping was born. These days climbers climb the rocks, in the summer endless crowds of boaters flow along the river, you will meet numerous groups of tourists on walks along the paths embedded in the rocky slopes. And when people leave at dusk and you light a kerosene under the old tar roof of your grandfather's cabin, you may notice that something remains.
Landscape
The location has been an intensively used cottage area since the 1920s. These are the rocky slopes of the Sázava valley, with forest stands on dry screes, with rocky cliffs, interwoven with a network of footpaths. Although it is forest land, economic use is out of the question. Logging is practically impossible due to the configuration of the terrain, inaccessibility and also due to the nature of the forest cover, where specific forms of wood species that are not economically usable prevail.
On both sides of the river there are a number of viewpoints, some of which are structurally modified and accessible via marked hiking trails, others are natural, only of local importance.
Place
The rock promontory on which the viewpoint is located used to be accessible via a forest path down the slope from the adjacent road in the past. However, over the years, the slopes around the viewpoint have been filled with waste from the cottage area, and a fence has been built there, so that the place has become practically inaccessible and has ceased to be used.
A family house from the beginning of the 20th century stands on the top of the slope near the lookout, whose garden adjoins the promontory and passes into the open landscape without fencing. The house also has an access road. The owner of the house approached us on the basis of previous cooperation on modifications and additions to the house. The client's vision was to restore, make accessible and secure a previously attractive place with a view of the valley, from where nature, animals, birds, the river and the landscape can be observed undisturbed.
The client cleaned and disposed of the waste and stabilized the slopes in the area, and together we began to consider how best to make the site accessible and secure it against falling to a depth of more than 30 meters.
Object
The basis of the assignment was the idea of a viewing platform measuring 4×4 m.
The location and foundation of the platform in such a complicated terrain represented a considerable challenge, both in terms of design and implementation. It turned out that the position of the viewpoint on the very edge of the rock outcrop, where we could use the solid bedrock, would be the most advantageous. In order to be able to get to the platform safely, it was also necessary to invent an access staircase and design the modification of the retaining wall in the garden, as well as restore access to the slope from the local road.
The structural and shape solution of the building is based on the condition of not interfering with the existing terrain, not cutting down any trees, and the possibility of carrying out the construction in the simplest possible way on a site with limited and complicated access.
The viewpoint is simple, copying the terrain and reflecting the positions of the trees between which it is wedged. A solid railing gives a sense of security and intimacy. As you descend the stairs to the platform, the view of the valley gradually opens up, culminating in the open side of the lookout, which is balanced by a wooden frame. The unobtrusive coat of larch paneling blends in with its surroundings.
