Donau University Krems specializes in postgraduate academic study and offers exclusive courses in the fields of economics and management, telecommunications, information technology, environmental studies, and medical sciences, as well as cultural studies. As a European model, Krems University combines high quality in education, research, and consulting. Over the course of two years of construction, the campus has expanded to include research centers, classrooms, a library, a café, a lecture hall, a building for the university of applied sciences, a cinema, and student apartments. In recent years, IMC University of Applied Sciences Krems has built a strong international reputation and now has over 1,900 students from around the world.
Krems University is nestled between existing buildings and slopes with vineyards. The large enclosed space is divided into several distinct volumes, led by the existing historic building. Together, they create a school campus of numerous courtyards that allow repeated views of the landscape. The urban structure ensures lightness and transparency thanks to the glazing used. The buildings have integrated variable panels on the façade that rotate according to the position of the sun. This was a response to the neighboring historic building (the former tobacco factory) and to the question of what university buildings should look like in the 21st century.
