Biography
Charles Alexander Jencks was originally an American architectural theorist and landscape designer working in England. He studied English literature at Harvard University (1961), later obtaining a degree in architecture from the Graduate School of Design (1965) and a PhD in the history of architecture at University College London (1970). He studied modern architecture under historians Siegfried Giedion and Reyner Banham. He was the first to theoretically develop the idea of postmodern architecture in the book The Language of Post-Modern Architecture. Although he did not coin the term "postmodernism," his book The Language of Post-Modern Architecture (1977) contributed to the popularization of the term. When asked what should be a common feature of postmodernism, he replied that "architecture must connect everyday meanings with more significant ones, whether social, political, or religious."
