Brno's Pecha Kucha Night is back after a long break, this time in its 25th edition titled Farewell and Cheers! This time, we invite you to meet personalities who deal with finitude, disappearance, and farewells (not only) in the public space in any sense of the word. The event is organized in cooperation with the Faculty of Architecture and the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Brno University of Technology. It will take place on May 16 at 7:00 PM in the former Prior, today's OC Dornych, whose upcoming demolition inspired the questions we will be asking in this edition. Concurrently with the event, there will also be a multi-day workshop Housing+, which focuses on the transformation of Southern Brno. Its results will be presented at 1:00 PM on the day of the event.

[Pecha Kucha] is a Japanese term for conversation, but also a way of introducing interesting people, ideas, and projects. Besides a brisk presentation, where each participant is limited to 6 minutes and 40 seconds (20 images x 20 seconds), the evening is primarily about meetings among designers, architects, artists, and other individuals (not only) from creative fields. The format, created by Klein Dytham architecture, has gained global popularity since its launch in 2003. Since 2009, Pecha Kucha has also been part of Brno.

In the 25th edition of Brno's Pecha Kucha Night, attendees will have one of the last opportunities to visit the former Prior at Dornych - a space that will irretrievably lose a valuable example of brutalist architecture from the 70s and 80s of the 20th century with its demolition. The imminent demolition of the Prior raises questions about how to approach architecturally valuable, yet often difficult-to-utilize or energy-inefficient buildings. When is it appropriate to fight for preservation and when is it time to say farewell and cheers? And above all, how can the very process of bidding farewell to disappearing parts of the city or landscape be beneficial?

The issue of disappearing architecture from the 70s and 80s will be highlighted by architecture historian Šárka Svobodová and architect and curator Eva Truncová, who have intensively focused on the former Brno Prior through the activities of the 4AM association over the past year. After architecture, Pavel Karous, the author of the project Intruders and Herons, or music publicist Pavel Klusák will transition us to the topic of finitude and farewells in art.

We will also address the finitude of life itself, with landscape architect and activist in sustainable burial Vilém Jurka. Other guests will include Lukáš Pecka with Ivana Smětáková, Jana Kořínková with Ladislav Jackson, Josef Vaishar, Alice Šimečková, Petr Kunc, as well as Oskar Helcel and Martin Netočný. As is customary at Pecha Kucha Night, the audience can also look forward to a wild card, under which an unexpected guest will be introduced. Attendees can also enjoy a complementary video installation focusing on the space of the former Prior, authored by Jan Kristek and Šárka Svobodová.

Parallel to the event, a workshop Housing+: Housing Between the River and the Train Station will also take place in the spaces of the former Prior. Three schools, London’s AA School of Architecture, Prague’s ARCHIP, and Brno’s Faculty of Architecture at VUT, will join forces for ten days. As part of the international workshop, they will map the area of Southern Brno, whose future will significantly change with the establishment of a new train station. The goal of the workshop will be to outline scenarios for the regeneration of this area, which will serve as a starting point for its transformation. The developed results from the workshop will be presented at OC Dornych on the day of Pecha Kucha Night Brno - May 16 at 1:00 PM.

Come to Pecha Kucha Night Brno #25: Farewell and Cheers to reflect together on how to currently deal with temporality and the transformation of places or phenomena in the public space. We look forward to seeing you on May 16, 2024, at 7:00 PM at Dornych 4, Brno. Tickets are on sale at the smsticket.cz portal. The event is created in collaboration with the Faculty of Architecture VUT and the Faculty of Fine Arts VUT. The project is taking place with the financial support of the statutory city of Brno.
