Symposium Architecture – no science! with the subtitle „Mediating Architecture, Education, and Inspiration“ will present on February 21, 2024, at the Faculty of Architecture of VUT in Brno, possibilities for bringing architecture closer to children and the public and increasing their awareness of the environment in which we live. Seven experts from the fields of architecture, art, and education, including Rostislav Koryčánek, Krištof Kintera, Šárka Svobodová, and others will present their views on the topic.
The symposium with inspirational workshops was created as part of the project Understandable Architecture, which has connected neighboring educational institutions, the Department of Art Education at PdF MUNI and FA VUT, since September 2023. The project aims to increase interest in architecture among students across almost the entire scale of our educational system, from kindergartens to primary and secondary schools.
Architecture – no science! – mediating architecture, education, and inspiration for students and the general public – will take place on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, in the auditorium of the Faculty of Architecture VUT, Poříčí 5 in Brno. Architectural historian Lucie Valdhansová will speak on the topic of the Architectural Manual as a Tool for Popularizing Architecture, architecture popularizer Šárka Svobodová will address the issue of traversing architecture, curator Rostislav Koryčánek will discuss the topic of Exhibition as a Specific Situation of Architecture, Krištof Kintera will present the Sculpture of Buildings, illustrator David Böhm and architect Osamu Okamura will introduce the audience to the project City for Everyone, and educator Michaela Casková, active in Finland, will speak about forest pavilions for children.
Following the symposium, inspirational workshops for students of the participating faculties as well as for interested members of the public will also be held, conducted by external lecturers Lucie Štůlová Vobořilová, Michaela Matysová, Romana Horáková, Martina Kárová, and Jana Kostelecká, through which participants can experience established educational programs from practice firsthand. More information about the workshops can be found here.
As part of the Understandable Architecture project, a team of artists and educators consisting of Andrea Kaňkovská, Susan Maly, and architects Anna Kotlabová and Adéla Šoborová is developing concepts for educational programs for kindergartens, primary, and secondary schools, which will undergo pilot teaching in participating schools in Brno during the spring. Through a sculptural laboratory, working with their own bodies, or documenting space, children and adolescents will playfully become familiar with the environment that architecture and humans create. Based on the acquired experiences, methodological materials will be developed, which the faculty will offer for wide use in education. The emerging educational programs will also be included in the Field Map of Education. The symposium will be held on February 21, 2024, starting at 9:30 at the Faculty of Architecture VUT at Poříčí 5 in Brno.
Registration for the symposium is possible here.
