Biography
Italo Rota is an Italian architect who graduated from the Polytechnic University of Milan in 1982. Before founding his own practice, he gained experience with Franco Albini and Vittorio Gregotti. During his four-year practice with Gregotti, he worked on the project for the University of Calabria (1972-1973). In collaboration with architect Pierluigi Nicolin, he contributed to the publication of the magazine Lotus International. In the early 1980s, he moved to Paris, where he worked with Gae Aulenti on the project for the Musée d'Orsay. He built upon this experience in 1985 when he won the competition for new spaces for the French School Cour Carré in the Louvre (1992). During his twenty years spent in France, he dealt with various aspects of design, from urban projects to exhibition installations, events, and cultural institutions. While still in France, he worked in theater during the emergence of new Italian scenic designers. In those years, he collaborated mainly with director Bernardo Sobel. He definitively returned to Italy in 1996, moving his studio from Paris to Milan, where he also served as a city councilor for quality of life (1995-96). As a professor, he taught at schools in Paris-Belleville (1987-90), Milan (1996-98), and Ferrara (1998-2000).
