Biography
James Stewart Polshek was an American architect based in New York. Polshek initially enrolled in 1947 at Adelbert College Case Western University with the intention of becoming a psychiatrist. During his struggle with school, he began to take additional courses, including a course on the history of modern architecture. After deciding to study architecture, he enrolled at Yale University, where he received his master's degree in 1955. He was a Fulbright/Hayes scholar in Denmark and also received a grant from the Graham Foundation. Before establishing his own practice in 1963, he worked in the office of I.M.Pei. From 1972 to 1987, he served as dean at the School of Architecture at Columbia University. Polshek views architecture more as a craft than a form of art. He believes that architects carry a degree of social responsibility. In 1986, he received the AIA Gold Medal from the American Institute of Architects. In 2002, he was awarded the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Medal from the City Art Society and was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2005, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He received honorary degrees from Pratt Institute (1995), New School University Parson School of Design (1995), and New Jersey Institute of Technology (2002).
