BiographyJan (Johannes) Duiker was a leading figure of the Dutch functionalist movement Nieuwe Bouwen (New Building). He studied architecture at the Delft University of Technology under Hendrik Everse. From 1917 to 1935, he closely collaborated with his classmate
Bernard Bijvoet. Their key project was the Zonnestraal sanatorium, where they received the commission on the recommendation of
Hendrik Berlage. Bijvoet's first wife, Jacoba Ezerman, was also closely related to the "great man" of Zonnestraal, Jan van Zutphen. Bijvoet left the Netherlands in 1925, where he later began working in Paris with
Pierre Chareau on projects such as
Maison de Verre. Jan Duiker also prepared for the third CIAM (Congrès Internationaux d’Architecture Moderne) congress in Brussels and was a member of the groups "de 8" and "Opbouw". He died in the midst of working on the design of the Gooiland hotel in Hilversum and is buried at Zorgvlied in Amsterdam.
