Biography
Jan Gerko Wiebenga was a Dutch architect and engineer who was a pioneer of reinforced concrete skeleton constructions in the Netherlands and a representative of Nieuwe Bouwen (New Construction) in the early 20th century.
After studying at the Delft University of Technology, he joined the concrete company Stulemeyer and Co based in Breda in 1912, where he was responsible for the implementation of industrial and infrastructure projects in the Netherlands and Belgium. His first assignments were in Maastricht, where in 1912 he realized a coking plant and from 1912-13 a complex of factory halls for the aluminum factory Société Céramique, which were largely demolished around 1990 due to the construction of the Bonnefantenmuseum. Later projects included the concrete dome of the Cenacle Church in Heilig Landstichting near Nijmegen, several bridges near Liège and Nijmegen, a grain silo in Veghel, and a chocolate factory in Breda.
In 1922 he was appointed director of the School for Industrial Education in Groningen. One of his first tasks was to build a new school building in collaboration with Leendert van der Vlugt. In line with his previous work, this building was constructed entirely from a concrete skeleton, making it the first large (non-utilitarian) building in the Netherlands built using this technique.
In 1926, he moved to The Hague, where he collaborated on the concrete structures of the Zonnestraal sanatorium (Duiker) and the Van Nelle factory (Leendert van der Vlugt).
In 1927 he participated in the competition for a new palace for the League of Nations in Geneva. From 1928, he was director of municipal works in Aalsmeer for several years, where he was responsible for, among other things, the construction of a new ULO school. In 1928, he joined the Amsterdam architectural group "8" along with Duiker, which aimed for modern international architecture.
From 1931-34 he was the director of the technical department of the municipal office in Zwolle. After 1936, not much was heard about his architectural activities.
