Biography
Jean Philippe Arthur Dubuffet was a French painter and sculptor, the father of art brut. He was interested in the art of the mentally ill, young children (of which he claimed along with Dr. Hans Prinzhorn that “it is not primitive, but on the contrary in mental balance with the universe and perception of the world”) and untrained artists. He also experimented with music. A long-standing friendship bound him to the poet Max Jacob.
Since 1945, he was a collector and tireless promoter of raw art – l’art brut (a term he himself coined) after he became acquainted with the book Bildnerei der Geisteskranken by psychiatrist Hans Prinzhorn, who focused on analyzing the artistic creations of mentally ill patients, from whose work he created an extraordinarily rich collection.
