Biography
He graduated from the École des Beaux Arts in Paris in 1970 and three years later obtained a master's degree in urban design from Harvard University in Cambridge (MA, USA). He was then commissioned by the city of New York, along with several of his colleagues, to reshape the urban structure of Manhattan. After returning to France, he won the jury's first prize for the design of the Paris Opera Bastille in 1983. His designs have received numerous international accolades: the French pavilion at the World Expo in Seville, André Citroën Park, the headquarters of France Television, and the Coeur Défense towers in Paris, the Sofitel Water Tower in Chicago, and the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, Texas, which was the first American modern art museum built by a French architect. His designs take into account historical landmarks, as evidenced by the library in Reims, located in the courtyard of the cathedral, and the construction of the archaeological museum at the site of Pont du Gard.
